Once you set up an account you can upload content or embed videos from your youtube or vimeo channel. This section will go over some of the ways you can get content online. In addition to video content you can upload pdfs, text documents, links, sound files, or embed slideshare presentations, these can be attached to a video in the additional resources tab or added as separate "library nodes." We highly recommend using YouTube to share your videos so that your videos can easily be translated to other languages for increased exposure. For more about transcription and translation please have a look at this page.
Getting videos online
Uploading to YouTube
First you will need to create a YouTube account or enable your Gmail account on YouTube if you haven't already. Once your account is set up you can start sharing video, and it is easier than ever.
To get started uploading videos:
- Sign into YouTube.
- Click the Upload link at the top of the page.
- Select the video you'd like to upload from your computer. You can also record a video from your webcam, or create a video slideshow.
How to hide your video from the general public on YouTube
If you would like to keep your video out of searches on YouTube website and only to appear in Conservation Reel you will want to edit the settings on your video as you upload.
Select the drop down menu that says public and change it to unlisted
Upload videos to YouTube longer than 15 minutes
By default, you can upload videos that are 15 minutes long. To upload longer videos, follow these steps while you are logged into your YouTube account:
Embedding your video on Conservation Reel
Login into your Conservation Reel account if you haven't already. You will see a submenu below the main Conservation Reel menu when you are logged in.
- Click the ADD VIDEO button
- Click embed video
- A window will popup for you to paste a YouTube or other video link
Attaching other content to a video
Using the tabs on the right of the ADD VIDEO window navigate to ADDITIONAL CONTENT, this tab contains all the same options as the Library option outlined below.
Adding Library Content
Click the ADD LIBRARY ITEM button in the user submenu and this will cue up a window where you can add various types of non-video content, including various formats of documents, links, audio files, and embed slideshares.
Each Library page can contain all types of content under one header, but only up to one of each type of content, except for links. The title field will be the name for this group of content or single item you are uploading. There is also a field for a brief description of what the content is.
Embedding a slideshare
Click the ADD SLIDESHARE button
A pop up window will cue you to paste the link to your slideshare,
(Be sure that you use the direct link from the browser and not the embed code supplied by slideshare, this puts some extra code alongside the link that confuses Conservation Reel.)
Upload a document
Click UPLOAD DOCUMENT and select an rtf, doc, pdf, or txt file to add to your Library item page.
Upload a sound file
Click UPLOAD AUDIO and select an mp3 file to share on your Library Node Page.
If you have an audio file that is not mp3, such as a Quicktime audio mov or a wav file you will need to convert it to mp3. There are several options out there to do this.
On a Mac : Switch is a an easy and free software for converting to mp3 http://www.nch.com.au/switch/index.html
If any of these options are unavailable to you please email us at firstname.lastname@example.org so that we can get your account fixed.
